As you can see we have now added another way in which you can donate to SAD via Canada Helps.  Canada Helps is a registered charity and public foundation that strives to provide accessible and affordable online technology to us as a charity and to you as a possible donor to help us increase the number of donations given to us to help us continue our work.  This is a wonderful way to donate from the comfort of your home and any donations that you make will be received by SAD on a weekly basis and you will receive your electronic tax receipts almost immediately. As SAD receives no government funding whatsoever we do rely on the generosity of the public to help us and we hope that this new and innovative way of supporting the shelterwill help us to continue improving our service to the Community.  To check out Canada Helps please go to www.CanadaHelps.org or to donate directly please click on the button below.

S.A.D. Organizations

The Society for Animals in Distress (S.A.D) was founded in 1971 in Toronto by Mr. Alan McGinn. He started the Society in response to the Animals for Research Act, which allowed stray animals in pounds and humane societies to be seized for medical research if not claimed within three days which he hated.
Mr. McGinn successfully ran chapters of S.A.D in Toronto, Cambridge, Cobourg and Apsley before moving to Elliot Lake in 1995. On arriving in Elliot Lake he opened this chapter.
Mr. McGinn passed away in February 2000, but we continue his work.

OUR MISSION

To promote the welfare of domestic animals, to provide shelter and care (including a spay/neuter program) and prevent suffering for those animals in need and to ensure that all animals in the Shelter are either spayed or neutered before they are adopted.  To this end we operate a no-kill animal shelter (for dogs and cats); only in very specific circumstances (suffering, terminal illness and/or dangerous aggressive behaviour) will an animal be euthanized.

We generate our income from:

1, Adoptions

2, Boarding

3, The Sunshine Shop.

4, Bingo

5, A Radio-thon

6, A Walk-a-thon

7, Membership

8, Other Various Fund Raising Events.

Louise came to us from the pound along with her brother Theo who has since been adopted. Louise definitely has "cat-attitude" and will let you pet her and love her when she chooses! She's a funny little cat who has managed to steal the hearts of all the shelter staff as well as the volunteers. When she's not showing off she really is a lovely little girl.

Rosalie is a sweet little bundle of energy and fun who can’t wait to meet her new family and start her new life! Rosalie came to us from the pound.
