Past Adoption Stories
These stories are from the new owners of the animals that have been adopted from SAD.
Bailey & Oakley
Story: Since being rescued from Manitoulin Island and adopted from S.A.D., Bailey and Oakley have grown into two of the best dogs we've had to pleasure to be-friend. They currently live in Halliburton County Ontario on a large wooded 5 acres with pond, river and lake, where we enjoy sharing our lives with them. They are such characters! With the best personalities and temperaments one could ask for, they have been very well socialized with all kinds of animals and humans of all sizes and love everything and everyone and they are loved very much in return.
Thank you for all that you do for the animals in your care, you do an amazing job!!
Cedar
Story: Good afternoon folks! I just wanted to fire off a quick email to let you know that Cedar (aka September Puppy 5) is fitting in wonderfully. She has a great personality and we all love her to pieces! Yes, even when she is being a brat and waiting to see how far she can push the limits, we can't help but cuddle and love her!
Hamish
Just wanted to let you know how Hamish is doing. We adopted him in June 2009 as we missed having a cat and also wanted to get a companion for our dog Ginger. From the day I brought him home, it was like he was meant to be part of our family. He has adjusted very well to his new home and he has made a friend with Ginger who is very protective of him. They spend a lot of time playing together with Hamish trying to get her attention when she is quiet. It always amazes us that he is not afraid of her. Hamish is very playful but he also loves to cuddle on my lap whenever I am sitting down. No matter what I am doing, he always is by my side, he follows me around the house all the time wanting to see what I am doing, . My husband always laughs at both Hamish and Ginger especially when I come home from work. They both sit in front of the window and watch for me to come home and they are both waiting by the door for when I come in. Hamish has been teaching Ginger to share toys and food while Ginger has become like a mother to him, cleaning him up and keeping him in line when he gets too playful. We are so thankful to have him in our lives. Thank you.
Jazz
Hi my name is Jazz. I was a resident of S.A.D , and I was born there. I was adopted at 6 months old to a young couple. I was so excited but alert about my new home and new family. I have one blue eye and one brown eye. I was a little mixed up about things but soon got over it. I have done my share of bad things around the house like, when my owners went to work I would break out of the basement and ransack the house. Well let me tell you they were not impressed with me. After doing that a couple of times my owner got me a cage thinking that would hold me while they were at work, well it did not. I got out of my cage so many time and yes I ransacked the house every time. Finally they welded my cage thinking that would work, but it did not.. I can break out of anything, even the rock room which is off the rec room downstairs.. I got through an 8"x12" window and yes I did it again.. I flooded the basement by chewing the handle of the water tap. By this time I was sure my owners wanted to give me back but they did not give up on me..With a lot of love and care I started to change my bad ways. I am now 2 years old and very laid back now. I love my owners as much as they love me. I hope there are people out there who care as much as my owners care for me.. Please adopt or even become a Foster owner , you will make many of my friends very happy to see that someone does care..
Missy
The wife and I had been in SAD several times looking but nothing caught my eye then one day I was surfing the SAD web page when I saw Shasta a Calico fixed and declawed.. I showed it to Helen {wife} and on our rounds the next day went in to see her.
At first I couldn't remember the cats name and we all trying to figure out which one it was when all of a sudden this big over weight cat wandered by me and I picked her up and of course she gave me the good old hiss so I quickly checked her paws and sure enough she was declawed.. After a chat with Debby we decided to take her home with us and she settled right in a bit scared at first but getting down on thw floor with her and talking softly to her she settled right into the home..
Helen decided to change her name to Missy and she took to it right away.. The fun thing and her little thing she does so well is to sit on her hind legs and beg like a dog however when in this position and you speak to her she raises both paws up towards the ceiling as if she asking to be picked up some times when sitting like this she will raise one paw as if to ask a question.. Its fun to see ppl faces when the visit and she goes into her little routine.
Missy of course was put on a diet and now she has lost a lot of the fat and now one can see her hips where as before it was just one big round body and a head..hehehehe
I still tease her every now and again and of course she tries to bite but if she get hold of you in her teeth she doesn't bite down just grabs you and lets go.
Today she has settled right into her new home.. and I have to be perfectly honest shes the love of our lives.
I often say to myself people go to SAD and look for kittens but from my experience I would go for the older cat they may be settled into their own ways but the adjust very well to the new home..
Odin & Abigail.
My fiancee and I adopted our first cat beautiful black Odin (formerly named Biscuit) from S.A.D on September 24th 2005 and our beautiful chubby little ginger furball Abigail (un-named) at the time from S.A.D on June 14th 2006. I thought I might update you on their progress. We were told that when Abigail's litter came in, they weren't even sure if they would survive, and by her little butterball size, she is definitely a healthy and beautiful cuddly cat. We can't thank you enough S.A.D for allowing us to adopt these beautiful animals. They are our children, we don't have any human babies yet so they definitely make up for that. They are best friends and are very happy cats. So THANK YOU once again!
Peaches
We adopted a cat from SAD named Peaches and she has been our never ending joy. My husband suffered a heartattack in October 2006 not long after we adopted her and she was ever faithful in waiting for him to return home. On his return she didn't leave his side for days even went so far as to follow him to the bath room, and she would sit on the toilet and watch me while I had a bath. She sucks on a fleece blanket at night to go to sleep and has to always be touching my husband.
Pearl Dace ( Rhea )
We lost our Min. Schnauzer in January 2008 and by February my husband was eager to have another little buddy around the house. Our daughter helped us with our search and found "Rhea" through the S.A.D website. After a trial period, we happily adopted her.
Although a little timid and easily spooked at times, Rhea, who is now called Pearl Dace enjoys her Summer days boating from one destination to another and lounging around on beaches on Lake Huron. She spends her winters curled up on a lap or one of her numerous beds cheering on the Leafs. She goes wherever we go, whether it is for a hike or just to run errands.
She is a happy, spoiled, incredibly playful little girl who listens so well and loves getting her belly rubbed. She is defiantly much loved and is a total bed hog.
She gets along splendidly with other dogs and has taken to our daughter's dog, who she follows around tirelessly and cuddles with any chance she can get.
Thank you S.A.D for being such a caring and devoted group of people.
Rusty & Puss
We adopted our new little "son", Rusty, a four months old orange tabby from S.A.D. The first day, we were really afraid, because we have a two years old grey tabby,Puss, and a nine years old mixed dog, Spot. We decided it is up to them if we keep Rusty, or not. To our amazement, the dog was his best friend at first sight; however, Puss didn't seem to be really happy about him. And of course the whole idea of adopting an other cat was that so Puss can have a play mate, and best body. After a couple of days, they started playing, being very interested in each other. And now, almost two months passed by, they are really great with each other. Puss partly became his "father" cleaning him from head to toe. And of course, since he's only four months old, he sometimes drives us nuts. But that's the beauty of these little cute fureballs. All I can say, is that we will love and cherish Rusty, Puss, and Spot for as long as we live, and I know we will get the same love in return. And we would like to thank everybody at S.A.D., and everyone who supports them, for what they do. Without them, those animals would have noone. We might not even have Rusty now if it wasn't for S.A.D. Thank You S.A.D. for doing what you're doing for all of those pure things, and please, don't stop doing it. Thanks again: Rusty's Parents.
Sudney
I just wanted to send a quick note to say that I adopted Sydney (formerly Kellogg) in September of 2007, and she is doing very well. When I adopted her, the staff told me they said it was nice that she was adopted before her kittens (as kittens are usually adopted faster than adults). I was smitten when I saw her, as she followed me around the room until I picked her up - and that was that. I picked her up the nexdt day and brought her home. She loves climbing on things and getting into trouble, and also loves sitting by the windows and watching the squirrels and birds go by. She is doing very well, and is very loved.
Tommy
We got Tommy over the summer. My mom and I never had the intention of purchasing a cat, but as we were looking and talking the volunteers, we saw Tommy wanting us to give him attention. Immediately after he won over our hearts, and we had to have him. He was so gentle and loving he reminded me of the cat I already had.
We were all excited to welcome him into our family. The cat we already had naturally did not take a liking to Tommy immediately, but Tommy never gave up trying to make friends, and soon enough now they are inseparable. We also get an amusement of his unique obsession to drinking out of the tap, and occasionally jumping in the shower. He is definitely unique because he is such a water loving cat he will dunk his head right under.
Not a moment goes by where we regret adopting Tommy. He is always there to greet us at the door when we go, and loves to get as much attention as he can get. Tommy is one of the most gentle cats I know, he is never vicious, or in a bad mood, or uses his claws or teeth. We were never cat lovers, but are now thanks to the cat we own, and Tommy brought more love into our home. Tommy always likes to be in the same room as people are, and is friendly to everyone he meets. Adopting Tommy was one of the best things we have done, and we are grateful for having him.
